The Impact of Money Scripts

Between 52 and 65 percent of people in the United States hold securities investments, the majority of which are in retirement funds. Considering the growing importance of using investments to prepare for retirement, exploring how individuals use and trust investment advice becomes increasingly significant. During this presentation, Travis Sholin will present his study that, using primary data, investigated the contributing factors associated with the use and trust of investment advice, focusing on the money scripts (money avoidance, money status, money worship, and money vigilance) of the participants. This study contributes to the growing literature surrounding the use of investment vehicles, the trust of financial advice from those vehicles, and financial behavioral psychology.

Travis Sholin, MBA, CFP®, has been a financial advisor at Keystone Financial Services in Omaha, Nebraska for 8 years. He also teaches as an adjunct professor at Creighton University. He is a PhD student at Kansas State University researching cross-cultural financial planning, behavioral finance, financial therapy, and intergenerational wealth.
